Chapter2

The Dead City is the unreleased second chapter of Underhell.

Currently, this chapter only exists in the form of a brief preview at the end of Chapter One. Beyond that, there is no official information regarding Chapter Two.

The last official news update on the state of Chapter Two was in 2016 on ModDB(3 years and counting), concerning Mxthe's future as a game developer and his career with the Insurgency team. He hints at moving Underhell away from Source due to the engine's age.

Plot[]

In this chapter, the player once again assumes the role of the Prologue's Jake Hawkfield in another dream sequence. Jake wakes up, finding himself still being interrogated on the incident that took place in the U.D.R.C. (the underground facility from the Prologue). Through Micheal's interrogation, it is revealed that the events of Chapter One starting from Junior's death were a stress-induced dream induced by Micheal in his efforts to uncover details of the underground facility from the Prologue. The interior of the underground facility in Chapter 1 is the facility from the prologue. Micheal repeatedly forces Jake to mentally revisit the gas chamber on Level 2 and read his father's diary entries.

This eventually proves to be too much for Jake's physical health and as the other interrogators shout at Micheal to stop, a jet can be heard flying over the city. An officer runs into the interrogation room, claiming that a unknown large aircraft is flying over the city. The room shakes and the lights shatter. In the confusion, several gunshots and screams are heard. The lights turn on and nearly all of the interrogation team is dead, barring Micheal who can be briefly seen escaping in an elevator down the hall. When exiting the room, a news broadcast can be seen on a nearby television. Jake walks to the TV, learning about reports of armed riots in the streets. There is a window near the TV where, if the player looks out the window, they can see multiple cars crashing and armed civilians running around the streets. Infected can be seen chasing them. Jake moves to a set of double doors to the right of the TV set, and the second chapter begins.

Gameplay from the first part of the second chapter involves of Jake sneaking his way through the police station, making choices to either follow his Guilt or his Wife. Choosing to follow his Guilt typically results in dead-ends or getting attacked by PMC Soldiers. Meanwhile, following his Wife allows him to progress through the map and find safe areas away from enemies.

At the end of the Chapter One preview, Jake enters a room, encountering both his Wife and his Guilt. Jake falls to his knees, screaming as sparks fly around the room and props are scattered around. After this dramatic scene ends, the door behind him is kicked open and a pair of PMC Soldiers enter the room, aiming their weapons at Jake's back. Jake refuses to move until an electrical spark is seen and Raito enters the room behind the soldiers, wearing an ACE uniform that allows him to cloak and decloak. Jake gets up, sprints, and jumps through the room's window. The electrical spark is seen again as Raito attacks the guards. Finally, Raito approaches the window and looks down where Jake jumped, the camera slowly pans up to the skyline of the city, and the preview ends.
